EuroTripping – Modern Buildings in Antwerp

Last summer, we drove our EV from Oslo to London and back, stopping for various bits of time in 15 different European cities. For our 9th stop, we stayed for a few nights in Antwerp, a port city in Belgium.

While in Antwerp, we rented an apartment high up in a tall tower in the Eilandje neighborhood. This ended up being one of those fast-changing neighbourhoods with a lot of new, trendy apartment buildings and eateries (and, important for us, a parking house underneath the neighboring new hospital complex) popping up where much of the workings of the Port used to be.

The idea was to have a “home base” from which we could do a couple of day trips to other cities that were not too far away. This meant that we actually did not spend all that much time in Antwerp.

While much of the city of Antwerp remained unexplored by us (we will have to go back and see the city properly another time), we did check out our immediate neighborhood and I snapped some shots of some the modern buildings nearby, both from our high vantage point in the apartment and while on our local doggy walks.

Here are a few images of modern buildings we came upon in our Antwerp neighborhood.

Looking from a balcony over to two other new apartment buildings built along walking and cycling paths

Looking over to the Hogeschool across the road from where we stayed

For some reason there were a bunch of these Egyptian geese hanging about (here with the Museum MAS in the background). I had never seen this type of geese before…

More apartment towers spaced along the water

This was our neighbour: a hospital that had a big parking garage underneath which we had access to. I liked the “train tracks” that appear to be a part of a window cleaning apparatus.

Next to the main AP Hogeschool building, we could see a mural by Antwerp native Larsen Bervoets, one of a series of “Rooftop Landmarks” he painted in 6 different European cities. (Psst, find the hot air balloon…)

Looking up at the building we stayed in

Not all of the new apartment and other buildings were tall towers. There was a cute neighborhood nearby with buildings with more modest profiles.

We walked around the waterways to see the Havenhuis (Port House), which Zaha Hadid Architects designed to bring together an old fire station with a modern superstructure

The short end of a long, renovated warehouse building, Hangar 26/27, is seen here. It was designed by CF Moller and contains a mixture of office space and shops.

Another view of the Havenhus where it is easier to see the juxtaposition of old and futuristic

A final look at the Havenhuis

Spots of light on the bike path running by the buildings seen in the opening shot
