EuroTripping – A Few Hours in Brussels

Last July, during our European road trip, we stayed a few nights in Antwerp with the idea of doing a couple of day trips to other cities “nearby”. On one of the days, we drove down to Brussels with the idea of having a nice, long wander around that city.

The weather, however, had other plans and the mercury, just for that afternoon, crept up to 33C. With the muggy, fusty conditions, we started melting and I knew we would have to leave some of the sights I was interested in for another time. We did, however, stop on our drive out of the city to see the somewhat bizarre Atomium.

Here is a series of shots from that day that starts off with some different architectural snaps, then a bit of street photography, followed by some artsy sights, and then ends with some abstract architectural captures.

The Royal Palace of Brussels

An Egyptian duck in front of Centenary Palace (Palais du Centenaire)

The Atomium, originally the centrepiece of the 1958 World’s Fair

The Finance Tower (LOL)

The Queen’s Gallery arm of the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

Looking up at the wacky facade of Plattesteen 18

It seems like all the beautiful squares we came across in the cities we visited had a bunch of ongoing construction for the high season, which was a bit of an unsightly bummer

The Magritte Shop

A window display chock full of kitties

I was feeling a bit like the figure here (in need of a sit-down…and maybe a drink of water)

A statue in a small park near the Financial Tower

A close look at the wee little iconic Manneken Pis

The flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (dedicated to the memories of those Belgian soldiers who fell in WWI)

Columns

Blue and green windows with cloud

Multi-hued windows on the Rue du Lombard

Ugly windows with street lamp

Tilted windows in stone

  1. Wonderful architecture and street shots. I was amused by your cover shot and it makes a good opener! The Plattesteen 18 does have a unique facade and it looks so different from a distance. My favorite is the face in the window. I know you have some similar from other places. Keep collecting them and make a gallery exhibit with the theme!

    1. Thank you! Hee hee, yeah I have to dig when there’s something interesting in a window. Faces are best but I’ve got two instances of feet as well! 😉 Pets are a fun face too. I notice it’s these window face shots I seem to click as well as any construction worker-type. I can’t not click for those. 😉😉
