Fall Break – Views Along Jostedalsvegen

Last autumn, we spent a week in Vestlandet where we stayed next to Lustrafjorden, an arm of the large Sognefjorden in Norway. One day, we explored Jostedalen, a river valley that runs from the village of Gaupne on Lustrafjorden up to Nigardsbreen, an arm of the large Jostedal glacier.

We first drove Jostedalsvegen to its very end. We parked by the lake, Nigardsbrevatnet, next to the arm of the glacier (which is sadly much receded) and wandered around. Next, we drove back to stop by the Breheimsenteret (a visitor center for Jostedalsbreen National Park) which had a somewhat better view of Nigardsbreen from further afield. Finally, we started back, stopping a few other places on the way to take in the views.

Here are some images captured as we drove Jostedalsvegen back down the river valley last fall.

The turquoise waters of Nigardsbrevatnet

You can juuuuuuust barely see a tiny bit of Nigardsbreen peeking out

Apparently this boat runs on a schedule to take folk from the landing across the water, closer to the mouth of the glacier

Looking at Nigardsbreen from next to Breheimsenteret (the visitor center)

Some cute goats figuring out which way to go

A view of Breheimsenteret

More goats later in our journey

I love a pair of dewlaps

Some water making its way from the forest toward Jostedøla, the river flowing down Jostedalen

Here is the Jostedøla, the river carrying the lovely colored glacier water down the valley towards Lustrafjorden

We noticed a number of potholes flanking the river
