While we stayed outside Basel, Switzerland this past summer, we drove to Lauterbrunnen, a village in a narrow valley in the Bernese Oberland region, to take a hike.

Once parked, we took a mountain train, which climbed from the 288m elevation in Lauterbrunnen up to 1274m where Wengen, a small village up on one of the ridges, overlooks the steep valley. After a quick wander in the town (and some liquid refreshment) we began to make our way back down to Lauterbrunnen.

It was another hot day and, fortunately, much of the initial hike was through fairly dense forest. This meant that we didn’t have a view of anything while in the shade — but seeing how steep the trail was, I was too busy looking down to find safe footing amongst the dirt and rock and root to care about a pretty vista. The sun was harsh and unforgiving but I did still, of course, take many shots during the hike when we did have a view or other sights to note.
