EuroTripping – Vienna Facades and Fountains

We stayed in Vienna for a few days at the tail end of June while on our “European Pretzel”. Here are some shots of, mostly, building facades that caught my eye during our wanderings. I must say, the Viennese seem to have really liked to festoon their architecture with all sorts of statuary and design — so look out for various and sundry faces and figures in the latter part of this collection.

Design by Otto Wagner

The Majolikahaus next door, also by Otto Wagner

Early art nouveau of the Schönbrunn station (Otto Wagner yet again)

More art nouveau at the old Karlsplatz station (you guessed it: Otto Wagner)

A peek at the back of the Neue Burg portion of the Hofburg complex

Statue of Archduke Karl fronts a long building with a multitude of windows and chimneys

Brick and turrets

Now a grocery store

Some modern architecture slotted in

I liked the mural on this otherwise nondescript building

(Just wondering how this tagger approached their target)

I was struck by this building for some reason, ugly though it may be

Faces leering down

What a job, to hold up a whole building

Fancy entrance, again with men-at-work holding things together

Fountain

Another fountain

Random figure — kinda creepy but I like it

More figures and filigree on this facade by Rudolf Kmunke

Doorways topped by statuary

A random mosaic in the suburb we stayed in

Colorful buildings

Happy and bright

Wassturm Favoriten: a quite fancy water tower
