EuroTripping – Buildings, Bicycles & Boats in Bruges

Last summer, we spent 3 weeks on a road trip around Europe. The 8th city we visited was Bruges, a small town in Belgium.

We chose Bruges as our first stop after we left London and only stayed for a couple hours: long enough to charge the car, have a bit of a walking tour (both to see the sights and to stretch our and our furry family member’s legs), and fuel up with food and coffee.

We purposefully spent most of our time walking on the canals a bit away from the tourists but did cross through the more crowded areas to and from the car.

Here are some shots from our brief stop in Bruges that feature the quaint architecture, the many tour boats, some bicyclists and more.

Cyclists on the bridge

Love the rooflines as well as the decorative metal toppings

That’s a tall chimney

Lots of tourists took boat tours

I liked the matchy-matchy of the tree, trash and moss

Another boat of tourists

Another quaint building

Selfie time

Across the canal

Looking over to the major walking thoroughfare

Quiet and shady

Hee hee…. Someone is sticking their tongue out at me (?)

I love the fairytale look of all of the turrets in the city center

More bicyclists

The iconic Belfry of Bruges

We happened upon some dancers with bells and sticks — they were great

Sadly, we did not have the time to visit but we were surprised to find a Dali Museum in the same structure as the Belfry of Bruges

Another tourist boat floating through a quiet neighborhood

  1. Well, it is nice to see Bruges in good weather. I went to the Christmas market in 2023 and it wasn’t quite as bright! It is a very beautiful town but as you say, so busy with tourists. I think we’d all benefit from places like this capping the number of visitors at any one time.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, if we travel to a city or town, we try to enjoy the pockets and parts that are more off the beaten path. It’s tougher to do during the high season, though, and in smaller towns. The worst, imo, are the huge cruise boats that belch out thousands of tourists who don’t really even spend enough money in the local economy they are overrunning to make it worth it for the host destination. And, again, it’s worse in the smaller coastal towns…
