Spring Break – Ales Stenar

While in Sweden for a week back in April, we visited an ancient set of stones located east of Ystad, where we were based.

Called Ale’s Stones (Ales Stenar), this oval monument of 59 stones, dated to over a thousand years ago, are arranged on a bluff overlooking the Baltic Sea.

We visited on a bright, sunny afternoon and with that harsh lighting, I knew I’d likely edit most of the shots in black and white.

Here are a few images taken during our visit to Ale’s Stones in the Skåne region of Sweden.

Some of the stones with a bit of the Baltic Sea seen at the horizon

Figures seen near (and on!) the stones reveal their relative size

Shadows in the harsh afternoon light

Backlit figures near the edge of the cliff

A look from one end of the oval toward the other

A sidelong view from end to end of the oval as seen from the cliff’s edge

A last look from the other end of the oval
