Summer Travels – Torghatten

This past summer, we spent a couple of weeks touring around various locales in Helgeland, a region of Norway roughly between the cities of Trondheim and Bodø. Our first stop was in Brønnøysund, where we spend the day hiking up and through its famous mountain, Torghatten.

Torghatten, on the island of Torget, is known for the tunnel that pierces the centre of its granite dome. A prepped path up and staircases down through the hole in the mountain makes it fairly easy, albeit steep, hike. We journeyed up through and down on a warm and sunny summer day, such that the shooting conditions were a bit difficult (for me).

Nevertheless, here are some snaps taken of our hike through Torghatten, along with a shot taken later that day from a vantage point high enough on the mainland to see through the mountain.

Heading up the trail in the scrubby trees, we caught a glimpse of the outside of the hole we were heading for

A few people, for perspective, nearing the tunnel’s entrance

The tunnel angles down towards the sea and we got to a point where we could look down through it to the islets below

Fortunately, there are stairs and steps built in such that it is easy to climb down through the tunnel

The main staircase

Lookup up towards the entrance we had climbed down from

Moody shot of the bottom of the stairs

A figure silhouetted up at the entrance to the tunnel

Making our way out of the tunnel behind a couple who I chatted with (the guy chatted me up about photography as we both had our cameras out)

Heading back down into the greenery

After our climb down, we heading on a path down to the coast and back around to where we parked

A later look from a vantage point on the mainland where we could just barely see through Torghatten
