Summer Travels – Vega

The second stop in our travels around Helgeland, Norway last summer was in the Vegaøyene, an archipelago of over 6000 islands that includes the large island of Vega.

We stayed overlooking the water on an island connected to Vega by a small road bridge and explored our local area as well as sites around the main island.

Here are shots of things seen during our stay in Vega, including buildings, birds, bugs, boats and blooms.

One of lots of old rorbu near the water

Reflection

I was drawn to the more dilapidated structures

But always love a turf roof too

Corrugated metal

There were lots of wildflowers blooming

Seagulls

We saw a lot of this particular type of bird, a common redshank I believe

This particular redshank scolded us as we walked by

There were a lot of oystercatchers as well and we were lucky to see a little, fluffy youngling walking (and well camouflaged!) along the big rocks of the beach — can you spot it?

An “older” young oystercatcher on the right

There were a bunch of these Six-spot burnet moths about, with their striking red-on-black wings

This boat has seen better days

A boat hanging out in the marsh

A boat with a view

This boat was moored in the water outside our digs

The same boat as the sun set at 11pm (not that it ever got dark while we were there)

Someone taking a midnight swim

Snorkling in the green waters of Eidem beach on the other side of Vega from where we were staying

The middle of the big island of Vega is very mountainous

A red house in a field

The island of Søla just a few miles off of Vega is mostly mountain

Happy clouds

We enjoyed the wildflowers

The blooms were so happy

and perky

Of course I always snap a shot of the local church if possible so here is an angle from the backside of Vega kirke
