Summer Travels – Dønna

The last place we stopped on our visit to the Helgeland region of Norway last summer, was the island of Dønna. There is a mountainous area of the island that is known for resembling the profile of a guy lying down on his back to look up at the sky, the Dønnamannen.

The European heat wave finally really caught up with us during our visit, providing us with lots of hot sun (that never really set) and very little wind. Due to the heat and humidity, we decided to explore in our EV, where we could crank up the AC.

We drove around Dønna and over the bridge to Herøy, an island to the south where we had a view of the Seven Sisters mountain range. Also on Herøy is a crazy (but cool!) botanical greenhouse-cum-household goods boutique called Etcetera. I stopped in the bathroom before entering the store proper and it was immediately clear this was no ordinary outpost.

Here are some photos from our time exploring Dønna (and Herøy) last July.

Looking from our rental place, you can see the profile of the Dønnamannen (or can you?)

Still water at night, no wind, no cooling down

Reflection

We saw deer amongst these wildflowers one of the mornings

The Seven Sisters

Dønnes kirke, a stone church built back in the 1200s

Abstract look at some greenery along a building at Dønnes Gård, beyond the church

Dainty flowers

A cluster of happy white flowers

Dønnes gård had a really lovely garden with lots of flowers and shade

In the left doorway, one could buy jams and jellies, in the right doorway: ??

Looking up in the restroom at Etcetera

The walls were festooned with kitch galore

In the butikk, which was actually a huge glass house, there were these little caves and alcoves filled with “stuff” one could buy

This area was actually recessed in the earth and was the coolest place we found during our stay

Black and white pictures anyone?

Close in on some decorative somethin’-somethin’

In the unusually hot glare of midday, these poor sheep were desperate to hang out in the shade

Up the road near where we stayed were some farms and we plucked some clover to feed these sheep

Beach sheep, found down on Herøy, with the Seven Sisters in the distance

At 4am on the last night: mist over the water that finally turned into rain as we drove away later that morning

Another look at still water, and the Dønnamannen having a snooze

  1. Many fine shots in your series, Kewtie. Your garden flowers are so well shot and that kitchy butikk was a gold mine of fun. Hard to imagine the oppressive heat in these shots! Thanks for sharing this beautiful island setting.
